The Winery, Surry Hills

By Greedy Financier

I love my dog to bits. In my eyes, he’s the cutest little fur ball. I hate leaving him at home alone when I go on my foodie adventures – most restaurants and cafés unfortunately don’t accommodate for dogs. So when I discovered The Winery at Surry Hills allowed dogs, I was thrilled. The next opportunity I got, I grabbed my animal loving friend, and we headed over to The Winery for a lovely lunch with my dog =)

My Dog - Blinky!

We were seated outside, which was perfect as it was a gorgeous sunny winter’s day. The staff were most accommodating with my dog, and even brought out an iced water bowl for him. I had been to The Winery once before, and although the food is mediocre, the atmosphere really is great. Sitting outside in the sunshine with my dog, catching up with friends, and eating is my ideal way of spending a Sunday afternoon.

Toasty Bread, Blistered Mini Vine Tomatoes with Goats Cheese and Olive Paste

We were both pretty hungry, so decided to start with some bread. The bread came out warm, and was crusty on the outside, and soft and fluffy in the inside. It was served with three simple yet tasty accompaniments – olive paste which had a lovely olive flavour, goats cheese which had that mild yet distinct tang, and blistered tomatoes which complemented the cheese perfectly.

Cheeseburger with BBQ’d Lamb and Fries

We both ordered burgers and fries for lunch. When the burgers came out, they looked pretty impressive. Sitting on a brioche bun was barbequed lamb, rocket, cheese, eggplant and I think hommus.  Although quite filling, the flavour of the burger just didn’t live up to its appearance. The lamb was tender but it really needed a marinade of some sort. The burger was also lacking tang and moistness – perhaps some sliced pickles, spicy tomato sauce or chutney would have taken the burger to the next level. The shoestring fries reminded me of Macca’s fries.

Although the food at The Winery may be ordinary, I would still return again. The Winery has a chilled vibe about it, good outdoor seating and is great for groups. As an extra bonus, you can also bring your furry friend along. So if it’s a nice sunny day, grab some of your friends (and your dog), and head to The Winery at Surry Hills for a lazy afternoon.
